Book Cover redesign

Dear J.D Salinger, it wasn’t personal.

The Process

Original Covers:

First Sketches:

In my redesigns of J.D. Salinger’s book covers, I wanted to experiment with volume and focus, using a central motif as a visual anchor throughout each design. Just as a recurring object in a story can shift in meaning depending on its context, I played with scale, emphasis, and composition to guide the viewer’s perception

Reflection

Redesigning the covers of J.D. Salinger’s books was both an honor and a challenge—how do you reinterpret something so iconic without losing its soul? I approached this project with a mix of reverence and rebellion, carefully balancing nostalgia with a fresh, modern perspective.

Throughout the process, I played with volume, focus, and motif-driven storytelling, ensuring each cover felt like an extension of the narrative within. I wanted the designs to feel familiar yet unexpected, like stumbling upon a long-lost edition that somehow feels truer to the story than the original.

More than just a typography and layout exercise, this project pushed me to think conceptually—how can a single image capture a novel’s entire essence? It taught me that great design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about emotion, intrigue, and a little bit of mystery.
